What is an 'autocomplete' and how is it recorded in Swiftype's analytics?

What does it mean in the Search Analytics dashboard when it shows the total number of “autocompletes”?

Autocomplete search requests are recorded while an end user is actively typing their search term(s) into your search box and the activated results dropdown updates.

As the dropdown is updating the results list, each refresh counts as a unique autocomplete search request. A typical use of the autocomplete (or “type-ahead”) feature will likely result in several unique searches. Because of this, when compared to the Total Searches graph, you may find that the total number of autocomplete searches is greater.
