To me this is not really an acceptable response time. Is this normal?

Typical response times on the high-end of latency are sub 200ms, so your experience is fairly extreme. If you’ve not done so already, please open up a support case and include a copy of your request that’s consistently slow to respond.
We’ll dig in more from there.
